The Ethical Tea Co.TM story

Putting people and the planet first

For a truly ethical tea company, every decision made must be geared towards a more sustainable future.

We hold strong values around taking care of people and the planet. We don’t claim for perfection but we are committed to action. We started with small sustainable steps and have grown into a champion for change.

In 2017, Ethical Tea Company founder Gill Bredl launched Social impact business, Charity Tea to help raise funds for New Zealand Charities. It was after donating money to help children dying of starvation in Haiti that one New Zealander saw the desperate need for ongoing feeding programmes. So she set up a tea company to solve the problem of fund-raising, and continues to feed children in Haiti and New Zealand.

As time went on her vision and values grew to wanting to greater levels of impact. Having a son with partial vision revealed the lack of employment opportunities for young people with disabilities. They often get overlooked as valued employees as they need extra care and support. She decided she needed to Incorporate providing employment for disadvantaged people as part of her Mahi. Solo mums, Maori and people with disabilities are represented on the staff team.

Taking care of the planet has always been a high priority and this is further reinforced by choosing mindful packaging, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions.

Gill soon realised that what she had created was more than just solving the issue of fundraising for Charity. They are, in fact, purposeful in all their decisions. They are indeed The Ethical Tea CompanyTM.

Safe and fair for growers

High standards of welfare should always be the norm. We source our teas from Fair Trade plantations, or from growers who are committed to safe and fair conditions. Unfortunately, as a small growing business and cost prohibitions we have not paid the administration fees for The Ethical Tea CoTM to become fairtrade certified at this time. It is on our radar for the future.

Equal opportunities at home

Our valued team of employees are New Zealanders from normally disadvantaged backgrounds, following our partnership with the Ministry of Social Development. We are working towards becoming a living wage employer

Supporting communities in need

We directly donate 10% of company profits to registered New Zealand Charities.

Carbon Positive

EkosTM has certified our day-to-day operations as climate positive. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and are committing to offsetting 120% of the carbon our business produces that we cannot eliminate.

Eco-friendly packaging

Minimising our impact on the planet is our priority. Our tea packaging is from recycled stock and either compostable or recyclable. Printing ink is non-toxic and soy-based. Stickers are made from recycled paper (where possible).

Our inner pouches are made from home compostable “natureflex film” which is a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic packaging. Rather than petrochemicals, the fully compostable product packaging materials are made of readily biodegradable cellulose derived from wood pulp, sourced exclusively from responsibly- managed plantations. All NatureFlex™ films meet global standards for home and industrial composting.

Health-conscious tea bags

Our tea bags are larger than usual tea bags at 7.5cm width. This gives the premium grade loose tea space to move and brew. Our tea bag paper is made from fully compostable ingredients and a plant-based PLA so no plastic is used. They heat-sealed here in New Zealand making them free from nasty toxins. No plastics, no tags, no staples, no dyes. No waste!

The inner pouch in each box of Ethical Tea is made from Natureflex 100% home compostable film.
